Golden Monkey Tracking. Golden monkeys are only found in three countries in the World namely; Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. They inhabit in the Virunga
Volcanoes for which are shared amongst the above-mentioned countries. In Uganda, they are tracked from Mgahinga National Park.
The activity resumes from Ntebeko Visitor’s Information Centre and requires prior booking. These Golden Coated Monkeys inhabit in the bamboo forest zone since bamboo trees are their major diet. They are regarded as one of the old-world monkey species, vibrant and indeed unique in appearance. They are an endangered species due to their existence in a limited environment. In Mgahinga National Park, an estimate of 2000-4000 individuals are inhabitants. Some are habituated, others under research and the biggest population living Wild.
Preparation for Golden Monkey Tracking.
Tracking resumes with briefing of tourists at exactly 8:00 AM Ugandan time. It is recommended that you carry packed Lunch, enough drinking water and rain gear. The dressing code is trousers, long sleeved shirts or blouse, closed shoes, hand gloves and a hat. Clothes should be nature blending colors.
The activity takes 2-6 hours depending on how far or close the Monkeys are sighted.
Best time to track Golden Monkeys
The dry season is the best time to track Golden Monkeys. This is when the trails are less slippery due to low amounts of rainfall. Given the fact that Golden Monkeys live in high altitude areas, the atmosphere is clear during the dry season compared to the wet when its foggy.
Other wildlife to encounter during tracking are Mountain Gorillas since they both feed on Bamboo vegetation in the same bamboo zone, endemic Albertine Rift birds and bush bucks among others.
